Anthony Larson LDS scholar, author and lecturer.

Deciphering the symbolism of the Restored Gospel is like putting together a complex jigsaw puzzle—the kind with thousands of tiny pieces. But it is equally true that anyone can figure it out with effort and persistence.

For those Latter-day Saints who have an interest in discovering a unique take on ancient history, as well as learning more about the symbolism of prophecy, the scriptures and latter-day temples, this daylong symposium may be just the thing to help fill in the blanks.

A well-known LDS author of five books written for Mormons, as well as a lecturer and scholar, Anthony Larson is the sole speaker during a daylong series of slideshow/lecture/video presentations investigating the connections between ancient history, modern planetary science and the Restored Gospel.

“Only those who wish their mysteries to remain mysterious should avoid this program,” says Larson, smiling.  “A brief review of a novel thesis about Earth’s true planetary history, supported by Joseph Smith’s statements, suffices to explain the enigmatic imagery and traditions of all ancient cultures, including that of the Hebrew or Israelite people.  From there, it’s little more than a hop, skip and a jump to deciphering the language of the prophets, the imagery of prophecy and the meaning of temple symbolism and rituals—in fact, the entire iconographic structure of the Restored Gospel.”

While that may seem to be an exaggeration, it might not be so. Unlike his contemporaries who popularize a worldwide Armageddon, Larson is not a proponent of the “doom and gloom” scenarios, in spite of the grand, planetary scale of his theories. In fact, his views cast an entirely different light on all prophecy and ancient history, making symbolism in the restored gospel much plainer.

“If, as one LDS author noted, prophecy is the key to the future,” says Larson, “then ancient history is the key to prophecy. The key to interpreting the colorful and vivid imagery of all scripture and temple ritual, ancient and modern, lies in grasping the archetypes common to all ancient traditions.”

Larson was the first LDS scholar in modern times to explain the relationship of catastrophic plagues and natural disasters described in the scriptures to the irregular motion of planets within the solar system, the first to connect errant heavenly bodies with the signs of the last days and the first to discern the reality of earth’s ancient planetary history and its effect upon the language of the prophets and temple symbolism.

“In reality, prophecy is only one area of the gospel where this astral view of scriptural symbolism comes into play,” Larson said. “The prophets used it in every facet of gospel exegesis. Even our comprehension of basic gospel principles is affected by their use of this imagery.”

Once the source and commonality of ancient cultural traditions is established in sweeping and spectacular changes seen in earth’s skies anciently, according to Larson, then it is no great chore to decipher that same imagery in the Old and New Testament accounts as well as in modern revelation.  Not only is this evident in scripture, it is the key to unlocking the unexplained imagery of prophecy, temple symbolism, Egyptian documents and otherwise baffling statements made by Joseph Smith and other LDS general authorities.

Billed as an “interdisciplinary symposium exploring ancient history, cosmology and modern revelation within the LDS tradition,” Larson’s presentation covers a number of diverse subjects, all interconnected.

His presentation is highlighted by a series of computer-aided slide presentations and previews of computer-generated special video effects recreating planetary deeds and manifestations in earth’s ancient skies.
